Karina KurtzKarina Kurtz
Social Service Worker, 2007

I have been with Ontario Works for 11 years now as a case manager and then as an employment development counsellor. I am passionate about helping others and none of this would have been made possible without Mohawk College. I did further my education and obtained my degree in Psychology and Sociology, yet still the connections that I made at Mohawk and the hands-on experience was what helped me most in entering the field.  Thank you, Mohawk College!

My most important accomplishment beyond that of my career, has been to become a mother to my 5-year-old son. I enjoy every minute that I am not at work spending time with him and my amazing husband. They are everything to me along with my parents who also made all of my accomplishments possible. So, though I credit Mohawk and McMaster with the education piece in landing my dream career, I certainly wouldn't have been able to do either without the support of my family.

Practical Nursing, 2019

I was hired straight out of school (after writing licensing exam), starting off my career at the Hamilton General Hospital on Acute Medicine (8 South). I spent around one and a half years at the General Hospital, learning so many skills and new things that I feel it was the best way to begin my nursing career. Unfortunately, COVID-19 became an issue faster than we expected and turned into a major problem for the healthcare industry. Personally, I felt I needed to jump right into the pandemic and help where I could - I tried to do as much as possible; I volunteered to work in long term care (Dundurn Place), I picked up shifts in the COVID-19 assessment center and I cared for COVID-19 positive on 8 West, when it was the unit. To me it was important to be part of the help within the pandemic, I couldn't just stand back and watch as the pandemic became increasingly worse. In the end, as much as I felt growth within my career and myself, it was tiring. I did end up leaving the Hamilton General for a new career at the Juravinski Hospital in Hematology Oncology (C4). After working on C4 for almost 2 years, I have seen a different side of healthcare as it's been a lot less hectic and more centered around patient care, rather than a pandemic. I am still working on my career as I have just reapplied for school within Software Engineering at Centennial College in order to pursue a job within the health information technology sector.

Since my time at Mohawk, I have gone on to work as an acquired brain injury rehabilitation facilitator in Hamilton, ON. I was able to get into this field because I was hired at graduation by my placement organization at Mohawk in the SSW program. In 2020, working frontline in the pandemic really shifted my perspective and I knew it was time to advance my career by upgrading my qualifications. I just graduated from the University of Waterloo with my Bachelor of Social Work and am now in the social work Master's program which is health focused. I look forward to a rich career in healthcare social worker where I am able to advocate for changes within the healthcare system to benefit those I support and the communities around me.

Business Administration, 2019

After being stuck in a dead-end job for years, I knew that going into Mohawk's Business Administration program was going to set me on a new trajectory in life, but I never knew just how incredible that would be.

After graduating with honours and having involved myself in student opportunities such as the MSLA, MoCrew, and peer tutoring/support initiatives, I immediately took advantage of Mohawk's partnership with Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland, where I was able to earn my BA degree in a single school year, later staying on for a second year to get my MSc in Financial Management.

In under three years of graduating from Mohawk, I moved to the United Kingdom, found a loving partner here who I'm happy to say that I've recently married, earned my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and have since been hired to the renowned Bloomberg L.P. at the European headquarters in the centre of London, England. I now work at the world's largest leading FinTech company as a specialist in Foreign Exchange and Economics and will soon become an advanced specialist for the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East, Africa).

None of this would be possible without the skills and knowledge that I gained while at Mohawk College and the support of the staff and administration that made it all possible.

Despite having an IT degree, I'm currently working in human resources, in one of the most prestigious staffing companies around Canada. You might be wondering how I came to be working in HR after obtaining an IT degree, well, it started at Mohawk College. As a new student in a foreign country, I found myself without a community to belong to. After a year of feeling the same way and sure there are more students experiencing the same feelings, I decided to create a club through the MSA. I became the founder and president of LASC, Latin American Student Club. During my third semester I was contacted and hired by a staffing company which was interested in my mission and the network I have created. I’m proud to have more than 350 Mohawk students in our club. After my first job in HR, one more time I was contacted and got an offer to work for Plan A, my current job where I was hired the day after finishing my last semester. I'm still involved with LASC and continue supporting new students and their families, I believe this is a mission without expiration date.

Samantha Witkowski
Personal Support Worker, 2022

When I began my journey into Mohawk College, I had recently been laid off from my work and was recovering from a traumatic injury all whilst navigating a pandemic. I was at a loss of options but everyday through the news and talk of neighbours, it was clear to me that now more than ever the world desperately needed volunteers to step in. I knew there wouldn't be a better time to change my life and my career, so it is respectively due the help of Mohawk College and alumni friends of mine who encouraged me to apply despite my worries. I am now stable with new employment opportunities. Most importantly I was left with a new passion, the ability to help where I was never able to previously. I am thankful every day to have been a student at Mohawk during these hard times because it provided me with a golden ticket to new opportunities.

I have started to work as a lab technician in one of the oldest organizations in Canada, Carl Zeiss. I mean the name itself speaks about the company.

Tourism, 2022

While finishing my last semester I was working a sales position with Rogers, but right after graduating in April an opportunity came along to work with the Mohawk Residence as front desk staff during their hotel season 2022. I jumped on the chance to put all my hotel operations training into practice and start my journey as a Tourism graduate in the hospitality sector. Hotel season lasted from May until August and I had a chance to see in real life how Mohawk had prepared me for the job, even if we were 100% online. Things worked out so well that CLC decided to keep me during the academic year to handle student season. Even with some changes, I believe I am ready to take on this new challenge and succeed!

Supply Chain Management, 2022

After graduating from Mohawk College, I have developed a good understanding of the field which intrigued me to learn more, and I chose another course in analytics for business decision making. As I was pursuing supply chain management, that helped me gain knowledge right now where I am working as a warehouse associate.
