Early Childhood Education, 2004

I graduated from the Early Childhood Education program in 2004. I got hired by the childcare centre where I did my fourth placement. I stayed in Hamilton at the same childcare centre for six years. When the government introduced the new program adding ECE to the kindergarten classroom I decided to apply and return to my hometown roots in Tiny, Ontario (45 mins north of Barrie). I got the job and have been working for the French Catholic School Board for 11 years now as an early childhood educator in the kindergarten classrooms. Another reason I chose to move back to my hometown was to be closer to my family as they are a big part of my life. In doing that I met the man I'm now engaged to and plan on marrying very soon.

Theodore Rocheleau
Health Wellness and Fitness, 2014

Since graduating in 2014, I went right to work as a personal trainer at a large and then a small chain gym. Although I loved it, the role wasn’t as fulfilling as I thought, and the environment wasn’t as I envisioned. I decided to branch out solo & start my own fitness business- TheRoc Health and Fitness. It was/is not an easy task; started in a park and now five years later I worked my tail off to be able to afford a studio, even through and after the pandemic. I would say the Health, Wellness & Fitness program provided me a great foundation of knowledge and information to start my career! The other large part - especially if you want to own your own fitness business - is to be focused, driven and motivated. Also, be prepared to never stop learning! I used to be naive and think I knew a ton about health and fitness when it was just the tip of the iceberg!

Writing for Publication, 2015

Before my time at Mohawk, I graduated from Wilfrid Laurier University with a bachelor's degree in English Lit. Laurier didn't have a writing program, so I enrolled at Mohawk to pursue this passion with the Writing for Publication program. Since then, I have found gainful employment at consulting firms doing business writing and web copy for civic tech companies. I also just published two books of poetry and started teaching a writing course at a local community arts centre for individuals with lived mental health and substance use issues. I find that the skills I learned at Mohawk were the most useful and applicable for my desired career, and now I have the great privilege of being able to give back and help others. I remember my time at Mohawk fondly!

Recreation Therapy, 2015

I have always had a passion for helping others and it is no different now, except that I was able to create my own business out of it. During the pandemic I really saw a place for my expertise to support others to regain their confidence and shift their mindset to break through barriers. I created Phoenix Coaching to be that non-judgmental space for others to go to. My clients have left toxic relationships, had difficult conversations, found time for themselves again, and learned how to be an even better parent, partner, and friend. The smallest steps bring the greatest shifts.

Pre-Technology, 2016
Architectural Technology, 2021

With COVID came new challenges in my last two semesters of school. In-person learning went online, and we became masters of Zoom and Teams. Through hard work I graduated from the Architectural Technology program in June 2021 and by October I found myself offered an estimator job which I have fallen in love with. My time at Mohawk had prepped me with the right skills and knowledge to establish myself within this company. Looking forward I am going to return to Mohawk for a continuing education class to sharpen my skills for the specific estimating software which wasn't really touched upon in the program, but my willingness to learn hasn't stopped. From not knowing what course I was going to take to graduating the Pre-Technology in 2016, which opened me up to the Architectural Technology program that has opened so many opportunities in a field I would never guessed I would land in. My coworkers are amazing, the job is challenging but fulfilling. I will never regret going to Mohawk.

After graduating from the RPN program, I began my career at St. Peter’s Hospital in palliative care. I was re-deployed after six months which led me to working in medicine at Juravinski Hospital. After 2.5 years, I was ready for a change and accepted a position on the oncology/GI ward where I’ve been for the past year and a half. My career in nursing has been as challenging as rewarding. After graduating, I never thought I’d be working on the front lines during a global pandemic!

I have also been able to achieve my goal of purchasing my first home just outside of Hamilton. We are all either working in the field or have chosen to continue studying in our fields. Me: bottom right.

After graduating with honors from the SSW program at Mohawk College I decided to further my education at Wilfrid Laurier University. I was accepted into the honours bachelor's of social worker program and will be graduating in spring 2022! Mohawk helped me to gain the skills to work in the social services field and I am now a full-time case worker working with individuals with mental health diagnoses, developmental disabilities, and those who require intensive support. I love my job and supporting individuals with their daily living, improving quality of life, and watching them make small gains every day! I was a mature student when I attended Mohawk at 23 and I am so glad I decided to take that journey! I will be applying to a master's program next year to obtain my master’s of social work and will continue to work in my community!

I got a job at Spirit Halloween for the Halloween season as a sales rep. Mohawk College has helped me a lot in the CICE program. Courses have helped me a lot with video editing and the co-op class has helped me a lot. Being the class rep for my program at Mohawk College I got to help the students out when they needed it. At Mohawk College I got the freedom that I needed and now I have a job working at Spirit Halloween as a sales rep for the Halloween season. I also volunteer in the community as well. I’m still heavily involved in Mohawk College as part of the CICE Council made up of students that have graduated and parents. I went to a meeting via Zoom last summer. It’s a fun group to be part of.

I have been blessed to work with students from different parts of the world in a private high school setting and now able to serve my alma mater at Mohawk College by giving back in my role as a student arrival coordinator. Welcoming every day's new challenges and learning experiences has been absolutely amazing and I'm beyond grateful to Mohawk College for the opportunity that was granted to me and the amazing faculty and support teams who impacted my life while I was learning.

Mohawk completely changed my life. I went to university with no idea what I wanted to do, when I discovered Mohawk’s Social Service Worker program I knew I found what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I’m a part of the Niagara Assertive Street Outreach team for Gateway Residential and Community Support Services. We are all around the Niagara Region and work with unsheltered individuals on their goals. Whether that’s setting up income, obtaining identification, access to resources, and assistance with facilitating shelter or finding permanent stable housing. Mohawk teachers inspired me to want to improve my community and to connect and empathize with individuals who have gone through trauma I couldn’t begin to imagine. I love my career, my co-workers and the clients I have the pleasure of working with and seeing every day. I would be nowhere without my own dedication to a difficult field and I credit Mohawk for helping me find this dedication.

After being off school for so long I decided to take a chance and attend Mohawk College and it was honestly the best decision. By attending Mohawk, I was able to meet amazing people and land a job with the Mohawk Students' Association. Even though COVID-19 hit, and after a year of not working with the MSA, I was offered a job this past August to come back and work with them as a student services coordinator! I also started my own side business last April called 'Jessica's Sweets', where I create chocolate strawberry assortments, chocolate breakables, towers & more! It's been a long crazy journey, but it's completely worth it!

I had to finish school from home, as the pandemic situation was starting, and everything was in lock-down. I accepted and I'm really happy now to be part of one of the biggest companies in planning and architecture.

I had a truly amazing educational experience with Mohawk, and I'm so grateful to the Mohawk staff for all of their support during this crazy course to help me achieve my goal of getting honours and getting the best job I could possibly hope for with Oxford County! Being the first group going through the accelerated program, there was a learning curve for both students and teachers, but there was so much support to make it work and to learn from it all to benefit the next group going through. We all felt very comfortable telling the professors what was working for us and what wasn't; I hope it helped with the following groups taking the course. Being 48 I was reluctant about going back to school but as of day one, everyone made me feel so comfortable and welcome, plus I made lifelong friends that will remain close friends forever (weird considering everything was online) but they were assigned to me for a group project in the first half of the course and we haven't stopped talking, learning or leaning on each other since. Mohawk was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life!
